Tribute to Dad and all who Graciously Serve

Dad on bottom row, far left with his comrades of the 489th Bomber Group

I am a daughter
and a veteran's biggest fan

Dad was only twenty-two
what a brave, courageous man

He fought the good fight
so we could live free

All those in uniform
sacrificed dearly for me

His missions were flown
over Germany and France

So we could enjoy freedom
and have half a chance

Thirteen missions flown
by the eighth Army Air-Force

Halesworth, England
would be their 'said course'

Many close calls
would threaten their day

They kept persevering
and made sure to pray

Remember to thank those
who fought despite fear

Not only on Memorial day
but everyday of the year

This is a re-post of a Poem I wrote in May of 2011
Re-Post for dVerse Poet's OLN #98
Thank You to all Veteran's whose courage entitles us the freedoms we are afforded.

  6. Wow, Linda. This gave me the chills. My father was KIA in WWII--he flew a B-24 in the 8th Army Air Corps. Such a small world. I'm glad you posted this for our veterans and those who didn't return. (I never knew my dad). Thank you.

  14. Oh wow~now I have chills. I am almost positive that dad flew B-24's but will have to double check. I am so so sorry to hear you never met your father. You must be so proud of his courage. There is no way to thank someone for such a sacrifice, but this poem and tribute is the only way I know how. God bless your father and all of our veteran's.

  19. I studied the photo, making sure the bombardier was not my cousin Allie. Shot down over France he was captured--fingered by a frightened French farmer--and incarcerated for nearly 3 years.

Thanks for re-submitting this well-written, easy poetic memorial to your father and many thousands of others.

    ...and thanks for visiting, Linda.

  29. Twenty-two; so young to have had to do the things he had to do. We forget too easily the risks that were taken, the danger knowingly faced, the horrors both seen and imagined and, as a result, take the freedom we enjoy for granted far too often.

Thanks for your comment at my place too, Linda.
